It might be time for an update in the American's with Disabilities Act. That's according to Congressman Rush Holt, who is sponsoring legislation in the House of Representatives that would clear up what he's calling confusing language in the current law.
Congressman Holt has been talking with Jersey residents that either are disabled or are advocates for those with disabilities. He says he's heard countless stories of people with legitimate disabilities being turned away from prospective employers because of dubious language in current disabilities law.
Rush Holt says he wants to update the language and amend the law, which was signed into law in 1990.
Holt says there are close to 200 co-sponsor of the bill in the House. Critics of the bill say it will make common ailments, like the need to wear eye-glasses, a basis for claims of employment discrimination. Holt simply says that wouldn't happen and the bill doesn't work that way.
He says he expects congress to pass the measure within a month. Then it will go to the Senate for consideration.
